Double Chubby Checker
From Real Gone Music comes a reissued Chubby Checker twofer containing the 1961 releases It's Pony Time and Let's Twist Again. The albums were the third and fourth of Checker's career.
Oddly, rather than starting the reissue program with Checker's (and the Parkway label's) first two albums (1960's Twist with Chubby Checker and 1961's For Twisters Only), the series jump-starts with the twister's third and fourth albums. Checker ignited a worldwide dance craze with his chart-topping cover of Hank Ballard's "The Twist," and hit the Top 20 again with a cover of the 1940's dance number, "The Hucklebuck." With his third album, he once again topped the charts with a novelty dance number, "Pony Time." The album also yielded the lower-charting "Dance This Mess Around." Later that year, he dropped his third of four albums for 1961, and with it scored a Top 10 (and a Grammy award) with "Let's Twist Again." He'd continue to ride novelty dance songs onto the charts into the mid-60s, including a return trip to #1 with his original recording of "The Twist."

Christie’s auctions upcoming Rock & Pop Memorabilia sale will present with the chance to bid on a guitar that was once owned and played by legendary guitarists Jeff Beck and Roy Buchanan.
Used by Jeff Beck throughout the promotional video for his duet with Rod Stewart, "People Get Ready," 1985 (Epic Records), the composite Fender guitar appears just as Beck intended, comprising a Stratocaster body (c.1961) and a Squier neck (c.1967) in a cream finish. The guitar was previously owned by blues guitarist Roy Buchanan and the famous guitar manufacturer Seymour W. Duncan before being passed onto Beck. MORE HERE

In his remarks, Obama said Dylan paved the way for other socially conscious artists like Bruce Springsteen and U2. "There is not a bigger giant in the history of American music," he glowed. "All these years later, he's still chasing that sound, still searching for a little bit of truth.

R.I.P.: Doc Watson
, the guitarist and folk singer whose flat-picking style elevated the acoustic guitar to solo status in bluegrass and country music, and whose interpretations of traditional American music profoundly influenced generations of folk and rock guitarists, died on Tuesday May 29, 2012 in Winston-Salem, N.C. He was 89.
Mr. Watson, who came to national attention during the folk music revival of the early 1960s, injected a note of authenticity into a movement awash in protest songs and bland renditions of traditional tunes.
His mountain music came as a revelation to the folk audience, as did his virtuoso guitar playing. Unlike most country and bluegrass musicians, who thought of the guitar as a secondary instrument for providing rhythmic backup, Mr. Watson executed the kind of flashy, rapid-fire melodies normally played by a fiddle or a banjo. His style influenced a generation of young musicians learning to play the guitar as folk music achieved national popularity.MORE HERE & HERE

Rhonda Helps The Beach Boys
May 29, 1965, The Beach Boys started a two week run at No.1 on the US singles chart with 'Help Me Rhonda', the group's second US No.1. R.I.P.: Howie Richmond
Veteran music publisher Howard S. Richmond passed away on May 20, 2012. He was 94.
In 1949, he established Cromwell Music, the firm that eventually was restructured to become The Richmond Organization (TRO), one of the world's most celebrated independent music publishers.
Over the years his stable included artists as diverse as Lead Belly and Woody Guthrie; Bill Evans and Kurt Weill; the Who, Black Sabbath and Pink Floyd; and Shel Silverstein, whose talking blues song “A Boy Named Sue” became, under Mr. Richmond’s stewardship, a hit for Johnny Cash in 1969.
Other musical gems published by TRO are "Fly Me to the Moon", "I Believe", "Those Were the Days" and "A Whiter Shade of Pale". Joining with fellow music publisher Abe Olman and songwriting great Johnny Mercer, Richmond co-founded the Songwriters Hall of Fame in 1969. MORE HERE

The Nugget proved the naysayers wrong and last night May 27, 2012 Merle Haggard and Kris Kristofferson proved it. The performance was the best I've seen yet.

Tales From The Presley Crypt
For the right price, you or a loved one can rest in peace in the tomb of The King.
Celebrity auctioneer Darren Julien is selling Elvis Presley's original crypt to the highest bidder as part of his "Music Icons" auction later this month.
The tomb is located inside the granite and marble mausoleum at the Forest Hill Cemetery in Memphis, Tenn.
Presley was interred there alongside his mother, Gladys, after he died Aug. 16, 1977. Two months later, they were re-buried at his Graceland home. The original crypt has remained empty ever since. MORE HERE

Bluegrass Meets Shakespeare
Steve Martin has a new writing partner, a guy even more famous than the comedian, actor, writer and banjo player.
Martin has teamed up with no less than William Shakespeare to add music to the playwright’s lyrics for a smattering of tunes at the Public Theater’s production this summer of “As You Like It” in New York City’s Central Park.
The show’s director, Daniel Sullivan, decided to set the action in the rural American South around 1840, a perfect time for folk music.

May 27, 1963, The album The Freewheelin’ Bob Dylan was released by Columbia in the USA. Establishing Dylan as a leader in the singer-songwriter genre and a supposed spokesman for the youth-orientated protest movement, it reached No.22 in the US charts and No.1 in the UK charts. The Freewheelin’ Bob Dylan showcased Dylan's songwriting talent for the first time and propelled him to national and international fame.
40 Year Old Class Clown
It was forty years ago today (May 27, 2012) that comedian George Carlin recorded the Class Clown album which five years later would inadvertently provoke the Supreme Court to canonize seven simple words as the apotheosis of American verbal vulgarity. That case, FCC v Pacifica, would come to be known as the “seven dirty words” ruling, named for Carlin’s routine. The Crickets Big Day
May 27, 1957, Buddy Holly and the Crickets released their first record, 'That'll Be The Day.' A UK No.1 and US No.3 hit. The song had its genesis in a trip to the movies by Holly, Allison and Sonny Curtis in June 1956. The John Wayne film The Searchers was playing. Wayne's frequently-used, world-weary catchphrase, "that'll be the day" was the Inspiration behind the song. It was also the first song to be recorded by The Quarrymen, the skiffle group that subsequently became The Beatles.

George Jones Goes Home
Here’s a bit of good news that has surfaced today (May 26, 2012) from George Jones‘ camp regarding his recent health scare. The legendary singer has been released from the hospital and is resting comfortably at home this Memorial Day weekend, thanks to the wonderful care he received from physicians this go around.
The Country Music Hall of Famer was recently admitted to a Nashville-area hospital for a continued battle with an upper respiratory infection that he just couldn’t seem to kick on his own.
Jones, regarded as the greatest voice in country music history, was hospitalized for the second time this year on Monday May 21, 2012 in Nashville, Tenn.. The 80-year-old spent a week in the hospital in March as well.
The singer has canceled his live performances through the month of June and will reschedule shows where possible. MORE HERE
Mickey Hart Plays The Golden Gate Bridge
Grateful Dead percussionist Mickey Hart plans to bring the sounds of the Golden Gate Bridge to life on May 27, 2012 as part of the bridge's 75th anniversary celebration. While the Golden Gate Bridge is not exactly a playable instrument, Hart maintains that it's actually a giant wind-harp. "The Golden Gate Bridge vibrates from its toes (earth, water) to its thighs (pillars of cement and steel), to its torso and crown (air, sky)," said Hart, in a press release for the event. Levon Helm May 26, 1940 – April 19, 2012
He was born Mark Lavon Helm on May 26, 1940, but for most of his professional career, he was known simply as Levon, the folksy yet soulful singer who also supplied the solid backbeat for The Band, the group that helped Bob Dylan ease his transition into rock 'n' roll and later defined the template for Americana rock music. Procol Harum Pale In Comparison
May 25, 1967, Procol Harum's 'A Whiter Shade Of Pale', entered the UK chart for the first time, where it went on to become a No.1 hit. 'A Whiter Shade Of Pale' became the most played song in the last 75 years in public places in the UK (as of 2009). The first video for the song was shot in the ruins of Witley Court in Worcestershire, England. Directed by Peter Clifton whose insertion of Vietnam War newsreel footage caused it to be banned from airplay on the Top of the Pops TV show.
The band subsequently made another video using "Scopitone" technology, but by this time, Robin Trower and B.J. Wilson had replaced Ray Royer and Bobby Harrison in the band, so only three of the five musicians on the recording are represented, and no performance footage included - only the five musicians cavorting around London, running across fields, etc.

The movie preview’s main track is courtesy of Françoise Hardy, and goes by the title of “Le Temps De L’amour.” It’s a beautiful French song with a cool bass-line. Kathi Kamen Goldmark was an author, columnist, publishing consultant, radio and music producer, songwriter, and musician. Goldmark was the author of the novel And My Shoes Keep Walking Back to You, co-authored or contributed to numerous other books, wrote a monthly column for BookPage with her husband, author and musician Sam Barry and produced the radio show West Coast Live. She was a member of the San Francisco band Los Train Wreck, and the founder and a member of the all-author rock band The Rock Bottom Remainders. From rare audio interviews of former slaves to recordings by Donna Summer and the Grateful Dead, 25 sounds that shaped the American cultural landscape are being inducted into the National Recording Registry.
Summer’s 1977 hit “I Feel Love” is joining the Grateful Dead’s famous 1977 Barton Hall concert as sounds of cultural significance, among 25 additions that are being announced Wednesday by the Library of Congress as part of its registry.

R.I.P.: Robert Nix
During a career that spanned five decades, Robert Nix held down the beat for many famous rock ‘n’ rollers while writing and recording songs with the band he helped start in 1970. The co-founder and longtime drummer for the Atlanta Rhythm Section died at 67-years-old on Sunday morning (May 20, 2012).

Sticky One
May 22, 1971, The Rolling Stones album 'Sticky Fingers' started a four-week run at No.1 on the US charts, the group's second US No.1 album.
The artwork for Sticky Fingers, which, on the original vinyl release, featured a working zipper that opened to reveal cotton briefs, was conceived by American pop artist Andy Warhol. The cover, a photo of Joe Dallesandro's crotch clad in tight blue jeans, was assumed by many fans to be an image of Mick Jagger. The album also features the first usage of the "Tongue and Lip Design" designed by John Pasche.

R.I.P.: Doug Dillard
The bluegrass, folk and country rock worlds are in mourning today with the death of banjo player Doug Dillard at the age of 75. Dillard died Wednesday May 16,2012in Nashville following a lengthy illness.
Along with his brother Rodney, the Dillards would become one of the dominant acts during the acoustic music boom of the 1960s, also gaining prominence and widespread exposure as occasional guest stars on "The Andy Griffith Show" as the mountain family 'The Darlings.' He also left his mark on the country rock genre as half of Dillard & Clark, which he formed in 1968 with ex-Byrds frontman Gene Clark. MORE HERE

Wonder Keys
After being honored with Billboard’s Icon Award, Stevie Wonder paid tribute to two other music icons, who made big contributions to the industry. The music legend spoke to reporters about Donna Summer, who died May 17, and Bee Gees member Robin Gibb, whose death was reported hours before the 2012 Billboard Music Awards.
Wonder went on to reflect on music’s ability to endure, saying we will forever have the voices of those we’ve lost, which can be used to “educate others about how great that person was.”

Peter Jones (above, second from left), who played drums for Crowded House, died on Friday May 18, 2012 at the age of 45. Australia's Herald Sun newspaper reports that he had been suffering from brain cancer.

R.I.P.: Robin Gibb
Robin Gibb, one-third of the Bee Gees, died Sunday May 20, 2012 after a long battle with cancer, his spokesperson has confirmed via a statement. Gibb was 62 years old.
"The family of Robin Gibb, of the Bee Gees, announce with great sadness that Robin passed away today following his long battle with cancer and intestinal surgery," reads the statement. "The family have asked that their privacy is respected at this very difficult time."
Two years ago, Gibb battled colon and liver cancer, but despite making what he called a "spectacular recovery," a secondary tumor recently developed, complicated by a case of pneumonia. The singer was hospitalized in mid-April and fell into a coma at one point, although the singer was later said to have regained consciousness and communicated with family members. MORE HERE

Montreal based Arcade Fire who backed Mick Jagger for three songs on Saturday Night Live last night (May 19, 2012), wore visible red patches - not as fashion statements, but very pointed acts of protest in support of Quebec students who were quite literally setting fires in Montreal at the same time. Censoring Sir Mick?
Some NBC affiliates apparently didn't like it when host Mick Jagger did a profanity-laced political song on "Saturday Night Live."
Near the end of Saturday's season finale, the 68-year-old Rolling Stones frontman performed "Tea Party," a bluesy number featuring guitar virtuoso Jeff Beck. Jagger told the audience he wrote the song, which is about the current presidential campaign and its candidates who "have to strategize a bit."
The next line included a curse word (rhymes with bit) that evidently led some stations to cut away early to commercials, according to numerous Twitter users. However, other stations -- including KNBC-TV in Los Angeles -- ran the whole number uncensored. MORE HERE
