Southern Pop Rock

You say Southern rock to your average music listener and they'll probably understandably think of Lynyrd Skynyrd, The Allman Brothers Band, and Molly Hatchet. There's also R.E.M., of course. The latter band, hailing from Athens, Georgia, was part of a much larger early '80s Southern rock scene that didn't draw from the blues but from power pop, punk rock, and New Wave.

The 35-minute documentary, We Didn't Get Famous, was made by Camilla Ann Aiken for her MA in Southern Studies at the University of Mississippi. It's an oral history of that fabled moment in music history, featuring interviews with Peter Holsapple of The dbs (who've recently released their first album in 25 years), Mitch Easter from Let's Active, Bob Hay from The Squalls, Vanessa Hay from Pylon, Tim Lee from The Windbreakers, Sherry Cothren from The Germans, Mark Reynolds from Carnival Season, and David Bean and Jeff Walton from The Judys. Aiken hopes to expand the short into a feature documentary.
