Economics & Fender Guitars
IN 1948, a radio repairman named Leo Fender took a piece of ash, bolted
on a length of maple and attached an electronic transducer. You know the rest, even if you don’t know you know the rest.
You’ve heard it — in the guitar riffs of Buddy Holly, Jimi
Hendrix, George Harrison, Keith Richards, Eric Clapton, Pete Townshend,
Bruce Springsteen, Mark Knopfler, Kurt Cobain and on and on.
It’s the sound of a Fender electric guitar.
But this heart of rock isn’t beating quite the way it once did. Like many other American manufacturers, Fender is struggling to hold on to what it’s got in a tight economy. Sales and profits are down this year. MORE HERE

R.I.P.: Frank Wilson
Frank Wilson, a Motown singer and producer, has died at the age of 71.
As an recording artist, Wilson only ever released one single. However, 1965's 'Do I Love You (Indeed I Do)' became a cult Northern Soul track. Only 250 copies of the 7" vinyl record were pressed and most of them were destroyed when Wilson decided he wanted to focus on writing and producing.
Only two or three copies of the single survived. One was sold in 2009 for a massive £25,000, making it the most expensive record ever sold at auction. MORE HERE

The Church of Alicia Keys
Alicia Keys’ voice sounded stronger than ever during her gig at Manchester Cathedral for the MTV Crashes Manchester event Monday September 24, 2012.
Despite selling 30 millions albums, winning 14 Grammy awards, being named by Billboard magazine as the number one R&B female of the noughties and even having Bob Dylan praise her in song, it is hard to define exactly who Alicia Keys is. She’s not an imperious, spangly dancing diva à la Beyoncé, nor is she a streetwise sexpot like Rihanna. She doesn’t have the battle scars of Mary J Blige or the psychedelic spiritualism of Erykah Badu.
Yet the 31-year-old has over the course of five albums been in some way all those women and at times more: in-demand songwriter, Bond theme creator, philanthropist, Hollywood actress, inspiration to the likes of Adele and Emeli Sandé and of late, wife and mother. Keys’ superwoman talent for doing everything and more with a dewy, lopsided smile has given her a kind of dazzling sheen that has often made her hard to pin down or connect to. ...Says Bernadette McNulty ...and we agree... Universal Takes Over EMI
European regulators on Friday September 21, 2012 approved a reduced version of Universal Music’s $1.9 billion takeover of EMI Music, allowing Universal to expand its dominance as the world’s largest music company but significantly paring down its ambitions.
Universal agreed to divest itself of about a third of the assets of EMI, including most of Parlophone, its flagship label in Europe.
The divestment include global rights to release the music by the artists on those labels, which means that EMI will no longer release records by some of its biggest acts, including Coldplay, Pink Floyd and Kylie Minogue. One consolation for Universal is that it will not have to sell recording rights for the Beatles. MORE HERE

Farm Aid 2012
Farm Aid is synonymous with star-studded rock concerts, like the one expected to draw 30,000 people to southeastern Pennsylvania on Saturday September 22, 2012. But the real work of the organization happens mostly behind the scenes across rural America every day.
Singer-songwriter Willie Nelson, president and co-founder of Farm Aid, believes the group's commitment to protecting farmland puts it on "the right side of history."
With more than $40 million raised through the musical performances and private contributions since the first Farm Aid concert in 1985, the organization works to keep family farmers on their land by awarding modest cash grants to groups that help small- and medium-size farms across the country. Farm Aid awarded nearly $308,000 to 42 organizations last year. MORE HERE

Neil Young New York Times September 19, 2012
Neil Young remains one of rock music's most intransigent renegades. In an era when veteran rock stars are falling all over themselves to make polished pop records that flaunt the latest wonders in keyboard technology, Mr. Young continues to make scrappy sounding, spur-of-the-moment albums that cut defiantly against the grain. "In today's pop climate, I'm an island,'' he once boasted. ''I don't fit in anywhere.''
