Alicia Keys’ voice sounded stronger than ever during her gig at Manchester Cathedral for the MTV Crashes Manchester event Monday September 24, 2012.
Despite selling 30 millions albums, winning 14 Grammy awards, being named by Billboard magazine as the number one R&B female of the noughties and even having Bob Dylan praise her in song, it is hard to define exactly who Alicia Keys is. She’s not an imperious, spangly dancing diva à la Beyoncé, nor is she a streetwise sexpot like Rihanna. She doesn’t have the battle scars of Mary J Blige or the psychedelic spiritualism of Erykah Badu.
Yet the 31-year-old has over the course of five albums been in some way all those women and at times more: in-demand songwriter, Bond theme creator, philanthropist, Hollywood actress, inspiration to the likes of Adele and Emeli Sandé and of late, wife and mother.
