Well, another year, another great Hardly Strictly Bluegrass Music Festival. Although, we were not able to catch all the acts (and it was difficult to choose), our top five picks for best performances are as follows:
Number 5 : Jerry Jeff Walker - Jerry was full of vigor; he had a full band and was accompanied by Todd Snider. He seemed to be having a great time and even played Don't It Make You Wanna Dance...a rarity.
Number 4: Doug Sahm's Phantom Playboys/Jenny Lewis - A tie for fourth...the Phantom Playboys featuring Boz Scaggs, Dave Alvin, Delbert McClinton and Steve Earle, among others, delivered a blistering set of Doug Sahm classics. Jenny Lewis showed up with The Watson Twins for a delightful set of LA tinged country music and lots of leg.
Number 3: Dwight Yoakam - Dwight delivered the Bakersfield Sound we all love...Buck Owens classics along with his own. He played loud & hard; busting up his finger yet continuing his rip roaring set...blood and all!
Number 2: Patti Smith - Patti's performances are somewhat difficult to describe because she takes you by surprise. The passion, the real feeling in her lyrics and delivery is nothing short of mesmerizing. When she sang in tribute of HSB founder Warren Hellman, the crowds' eyes welled up with emotion. Incredible!
Number 1: Seasick Steve - A musical technician he is not, but Seasick Steve put on the wildest rocking performance of the weekend. Joined by legendary Led Zeppelin bassist John Paul Jones, Seasick Steve jammed on a three string guitar, a cigar-box guitar and a guitar he fashioned out of a hubcap gifted to him by Jack White. Go see this man perform!
