Lost Bennett/Brubeck Sessions Discovered
Worlds collide more seamlessly in a newly unearthed, dual live disc uniting standard bearer Tony Bennett with pop-jazz pioneer Dave Brubeck.
It captures the two at a Washington show over 50 years ago, at their pop-star heights. Bennett had just released “I Left My Heart in San Francisco” while Brubeck’s combo was still dining out on their three-year-old smash “Take Five.”
While their short, separate sets have snap, greatly aided by a rivetingly crisp recording, it’s the barely rehearsed, four-song tete-a-tete between the stars that really swings. On “That Old Black Magic,” Bennett sails with consummate grace over Brubeck’s piano, while their take on “There Will Never Be Another You” soars saloon singing to the sky.
