The Restoration Of Tammy Wynette

After a lengthy battle, the daughters of Tammy Wynette have succeeded in having the singer’s stage name returned to her crypt.

In 2012, Wynette’s step-daughter, Deirdre Richardson Hale, who owns the crypt at Woodlawn Cross Mausoleum in Nashville, changed the name to Virginia Wynette Richardson in advance of a planned challenge of Wynette’s intellectual property.

Wynette’s daughters originally thought the name would be changed to the singer’s birth name, Virginia Wynette Pugh. Instead, she was given the last name of her fifth husband, George Richardson, who passed away in 2010.

The daughters, who never intended for the change to be permanent, launched a widespread media campaign, including a Facebook page that had more than 3700 members, to have her stage name returned to the site.

“We were just going to go ahead and start raising the money to move her, but we didn’t have to do that,” Wynette’s daughter, Jackie Daly, tells Nashville’s Tennessean, adding that she believes the widespread attention caused her step-sister, Hale, to have a change of heart. Daly and her sisters were seeking a court order to have the name changed.

“She worked very hard and long her whole life for that name,” daughter Georgette Jones Lennon says. “That’s who she believed she was. That is who she was.” source
