R.I.P.: Jerry Vale
Jerry Vale — the Bronx-born crooner who shot to the top of the music charts in the 1950s — died Sunday May 18, 2014. He was 83.
Born Genaro Louis Vitaliano, Vale was a shoe-shine boy in John’s Barber Shop in Mount Vernon at age 11 when his singing career started. “The more I sang, the larger tips I got,” Vale said in a 1997 interview. John the barber thought Vale showed promise and sent him to a local music teacher for lessons.
His first big hit was “You Can Never Give Me Back My Heart” in 1953. That success was follow by a string of chart-toppers, including “And This is My Beloved,” “You Don’t Know Me” and the crowd-pleaser, “Al-Di-La.”
His version of "The Star-Spangled Banner", recorded in 1963, was a fixture at many sporting events for years. The gold record Vale achieved for this was displayed at the National Baseball Hall of Fame located in Cooperstown, New York. MORE HERE & HERE
